This weekend the crew of Mārtiņš Sesks/Renārs Francis became the winners of the the Azores Rallye ERC Open class and finished 10th overall.
The final day of the rally started with an unpleasant technical surprise – the engine was running at 50% power and could not be fixed in the service area. Nevertheless, on SS13, with the track leading downhill, Sesks/Feancis managed to set a Top10 time!
“The main goal of this rally was to gain extra experience. We did everything we could to fix the technical issue. Unfortunately the problem was bigger. The feeling was good and the pace, too. Trajectories were clean. I think it would have been a good result overall!”
Despite the technical issues, the crew managed to move three positions up to the 10th place in overall standings. Sesks and Francis had a convincing lead over ERC Open contestants, leaving the closest follower Joan Vinues (Spain) more than 5 minutes behind.
This was the third race for the Latvian crew with Škoda Fabia R4. Sesks switched to the four wheel drive this season and tested Rally 2 Kit car during Rally “Sarma” (Latvia), that was followed by the first ERC stage in Portugal, where Sesks/Francis finished 7th overall and first in their class.
The next ERC round will be the Islas Canarias Rally in Spain from May 12-14, while the fifth round is scheduled for July 2-3 in Liepāja, Latvia.
