Sesks eyes ERC Open success on MRF debut

Mārtiņš Sesks headlines the ERC Open entry for Orlen 78th Rally Poland this week (10 – 12 June) on his Team MRF Tyres debut. The rally will start in Mikołajki on Friday evening ahead of two days of competition on rapid gravel roads with many tricky crests and jumps. The 14 stages cover 188.10 km.

The Latvian driver holds third in the championship having won the Azores Rallye, although he missed the previous round at Rally Islas Canarias.

He announced last week that he would join Team MRF Tyres for the remainder of the season and the roads around the Masurian lake district will play the perfect host for his debut.Martins Sesks:

“It’s a really nice thing to happen now in the mid-season,” Sesks said of his MRF deal. “This gives us a new boost for the future, so I am really excited. I really hope that this will be a long-term relationship and I want to get to work as soon as possible in Poland,” he added.

Poland’s all-gravel stages share a similar high-speed nature with Sesks’ home roads around Liepāja and the 22-year-old can’t wait to get going in his Škoda Fabia Rally 2 Kit.  After the testing session around Kurzeme roads, the Sesks praises the cooperation with Proracing Engeniering and R4Skoda in preparing the car for the upcoming race.

“We have a great understanding with the team and they have prepared the car perfectly. We have also done as much as we can with the engineers to make sure that we run well on the new tires.”

So far Sesks has run Rally Poland only once. In 2018 his adventure was interrupted by an accident.

“The last and the first time I drove in Poland was not the most successful rally, but I won the European title there. It’s always nice to have a more difficult and tricky rally like Poland first, where there are sandier and narrower roads, and then to come to Liepāja, where the roads are faster, harder, and more familiar. If everything goes as expected in Poland, it will be a good base for the Liepāja Rally.”

On July 1-3 the European Rally Champion will also visit Sesks’s home city for Rally Liepaja.
